Default How far to travel?

Haw far will it be practical to drive every day to University?
I live on the east coast near Great Yarmouth.
The closest University to me is the UEA in Norwich.
This is my first choice & is about 45mins -1 hr away.
The next closest University is UCS in Ipswich which is about 1 1/2 hrs away.

I want to increase my chances (hopefully) by applying to more than one uni but is a 1 1/2hrs drive there and 1 1/2 hrs drive home going to be too much?
The placement shouldn't be a problem as the UCS uses one of my local hospitals for placements.

Any advice would be great x

Hi

3hrs per day travelling is a lot, but it depends perhaps on other things. If you have kids you might have to think of the impact this amount of travelling will have on them..............and you. Us mums know that your day doesn't end until you drop into bed at night lol good luck deciding x

Would you be guarenteed your nearest hospital as your home trust? If not, I'd think very carefully before applying to a uni hours away. You could find yourself with a home trust that is the same distance in the opposite direction to your uni... so over 2 hours drive eachway on top of shift

We've a few that are a good hour away from uni and one that does reading to bristol everyday - but then has waited til her kids were older because of this - think her youngest is 14 - makes all the difference. Anythings doable if you want it badly enough - but thats the big question for a lot of us with everything your up against - do you really want it that badly!?

Good luck with your decision making!

Traveling to far would put you under a lot of pressure, so I agree with Noo think very carefuly before you apply to the other uni.

This has happend to me this year I was only offerd a place at my so called back up uni (it was only a back up beacuse there are unis closer tome)................anyway I will have to travel to my uni which is 45 mins to an hour depending on the traffic which I think is doable but if it had been any further then I don't think I would have applied at all.

The only thing I am dreading now is the actual cost of getting to uni with the
price of petrol and paying to go through the Mersey Tunnel twice a day...How the heck am I ment afford that when I am a poooooooooooooor student lololol
I am hoping I will be able to pick-up some of the ladies in my cohort, if not I think I will be going Public eekkkkkkkkkkkkk haven't done public transport for years and its alway bedlem during peak times...........oh well what ever is cheapest I will be doing.

god haven't I gone on, sorry to waffle so much!! x x x

Hiya, I'm also going to have tohave to travel about 1 and a half hours there and then back again. Really don't knoe how I'm going to cope as where I work now is a 15min walk away! The thing that really worries me is driving home after a night shift as many of the placements will be 2+ hours away! Look out Red Bull here I come! I have to do it as I won't even consider not doing it, I WILL be a midwife! Unless it kills me first! LOL!

I think we all have our own personal limits...I think it depends on what sort of commitments you have at home, I think if I had no family commitments then I would be prepared to travel further a field, but as it is I do have a family so Edge Hill was my absaloute limit.

I think alot of us will be reaching for the Red Bull and Black Coffee after the dreaded Night Shifts!! lololol x x x

When i start in September, I'll have an hour and a quarter drive each way. i know its gonna take soe getting used to but my plan is to get in an hour earlier - miss the birmingham rush house traffic and stay on an hour or two in the evening - do my private study in this time in the library - meaning that when i get home, i wont have too much to do in the evenings.

it just depends on how much u want this and your existing commitments.

good luck with what ever u decide

I feel so lucky because Teesside was actually my first choice! Its the closest and easiest to get to (Still 45 minutes away!), my 3rd choice rejected me and I decided that my 4th choice was actually too far and withdrew (didn't attend my interview).

Travelling will be a pain, it'll be expensive. I certainly can't do it on public transport as the train station is 3 miles away... I'd have to pay to park my car there and then the train.. Seems pointless when I can just drive and park on the street somewhere!

I think we'll get used to the travelling. I'm unaware as to where my placement is going to be and I won't find out til we start. Its going to be very difficult if I have to travel further than my first choice placement (15 minutes away) and I reckon an hour + after a nightshift will be a killer! Ahh well... We wouldn't do it if its not what we wanted to do, would we?
