Lightbulb Planning ahead

I'm new and wanted to say hi and see if anyone else is in my situation - I'm sure I'm not alone!
I have 2 children and my health visitor asked me if I'd ever considered midwifery as she thought I'd be good, and as it's always been at the back of my mind I thought I'd do some research.
From what I've found out I think I'll have to plan my application as a student midwife over the next 6ish years.
Is anyone else looking at this kind of time scale and what are you planning to study in the meantime? I'm looking at doing a distance learning diploma in anatomy and physiology before doing an access to midwifery course - is this a good idea?
Sorry if it sounds a bit rambling but any advice, ideas and support gratefully received

Hi AuntyKrate!

I would first check what your chosen uni's require, for some access will be enough but other's require more credits in biology so the A&P course would be required. Good luck with it all! x

Hi auntykrate

Welcome to the site. The first thing that I would do is to look at where my nearest Universities are and look at the websites to learn a bit more about them and their entry requirements.

See here:

http://www.studentmidwife.net/universities.php

Then I would contact them and attend their open Days and ask as many questions as I could about the course content, the structure, the hours , the placements etc. I would also have found some suitable access courses and ask the Universities if they would accept them.

I would then apply for access and go from there. people on the site are all at different stages so there is always someone about who is doing it , been there or done that so you have a captive audience for all your questions.

Good luck!! It is a really exciting time.

Thanks for you're reply coffeebean. Not sure where I would study at the moment as I'm in the Channel Islands and there is no uni here. Also I'm going to wait til my youngest is at school until i start my midwifery training - he's only 9months at the mo. So I just wanted to study something relevant to get back into the swing of learning again.
Lots of Luck with your studying

Hi Aunty!

Welcome to the site, I spent 7 years living in the channel Islands (the biggest one) and loved it. You would have to come to a uni over here to train, prob the South West is best for you as it is straight across the water. I dunno about colleges and what you could do over there though?

Good luck with it all, any help you need there is always one of us (or usually several) who can help!

Just thinking of doind something via distance learning to keep my hand in until it's better timing to do the access course. Being in the 3rd largest of the islands, there are very few resources available to me - so distance learning is my only option.

Ahhhh yes I see, there is. You can do the equivalent of the access course via the OU (may be higher than, though I don't know much about it, except to say some ladies on here have done it!)

So it may be well asking advise on here as to which one to do?

Good luck with it, I hope you do well!

Given the time scale you are aiming for, IMO, it would be a good idea for you to do the A&P diploma 1st, as for some unis there isn't enough biology on the access course (I'm presuming you mean the DLC course?) and it's only going to strengthen your application to those uni's who don't require extra biology.

Would you also be able to get a bit of work experience/voluntary work at a maternity unit/hospital? It's not essential (I haven't got any) but would be an advantage when you do come to apply.

The hospital on my Island is very small, and there are only on average 10 births a year, so getting maternity experience isn't going to be easy. I am already a nursery nurse and have been employed on special care baby unit - so I'm hoping that this will help my application.
I was referring to doing the access course via DLC, does anyone have any comments on that particular course, good or bad, would be great!
