Default Are there jobs for Newly Qualified Midwives?

Due to start at Bournemouth Uni this Sept but am getting concerned about the job situation once qualified. I'm leaving a very very well paid career to re-train as a midwife but hope it will not all be in vain if there aren't enough jobs for newly qualifieds. I'll be 45 by the time I qualify and if there aren't jobs for all how will I stand a chance of a job against a younger midwife! I'm more than prepared to earn nothing for the next 3 years and to work as a midwife earning 10k less than now to fulfill my ambition but will be devastated if it'll all be in vain. What's the true picture of jobs for newly qualifieds?

The job situation should be getting better year on year. The Government are highlighting the plight of midwifery care and acknowledge that it needs more staff. However, these things are never going to happen overnight.

Speak to your local trusts in the area and ask the practice development midwife to let you know what their medium term goals are for the employment of midwives.

At the trust I train at, the students last year were all told that there are no jobs, then they got told that there would be a preceptorship post for 4 - 6 months, but last year, all the students were offered full time posts before they got their pin numbers.

Fingers are now crossed that they do the same for us this year.
