I would recommend HANDCREAM as an essential!! I wash my hands about 100 times a shift and they would fall apart without regular creaming!! Your hands will thank you for it!

Ditto to that! Even better, once you start nag your clinical areas to get hand cream installed at each wash station as standard! It seems to be slowly happening at our hospital so my current tactic is to nick a bottle from stores and take it into the room I am working in - don't see why I should buy my own, and don't think it's very hygienic to keep it in your pocket! lol

Hi-lighters especially mini ones (asda) for on placement - great for hi-lighting bits on handovers (if you get a sheet)/hilighting your notes.

Mints for bad smells on placement, and for when you have a woman about to deliver and leaving the room for a glass of water isn't an option!

Paracetamol - always an essential as fluorescent lighting always seems to give me a headache at the end of a 12 hour shift. (although it could be down to dehydration...)

Take something to eat with you as the cost of cafeteria food is quite shocking, plus it's always handy to be able to grab a quick bite as and when you can.
