It is terrible if colleges are going to start turning away potential midwifery students. Me and rainbow goddess also heard yesterday that they are going to try and change apllication for A level students. (wont be for a coouple of years as this is huge and will take years to complete)
People who are completing alevels, will not be able to apply for midwifery until they have thier alevel results!!!! what a rush that is going to be!!! a month to sort yourself out and the uni,s for that matter. How will they go through hundreds of applications, interviews and desicions in amatter of 5 wks???
This also brings issues of all others who are applying - I mean are they going to have to reserve a number of places for the A level people???

I'm sure they're just testing - there are those that will be told to go for nursing etc instead and will say 'oh alright then - that sounds a bit easier' or whatever - in which case they probably wouldn't have the resolve to make it through - so is it not better for everyone - including them - that they change their mind early?

I've found my journey to midwifery so far full of hurdles - the attempted disuation at access interview was just the first! and I am under no misconception that there will be any fewer over the rest of my training - to be a true advocate for women we are all going to have to stand up and fight for what we believe sometimes - and the more we have had to overcome to get there - the better we'll be at doing it!

Take heed ladies - they're mearly testing our resolve!

I read your messages with interest. Only this morning whilst trying, yet again, to speak to a tutor about the access course, an admin lady answered the phone and said "well you know that there are loads of people wanting to do midwifery, you'd be better doing general nursing and then bolt on the midwifery bit later"

Me thinks there may be some grand plan to get more of us in to general nursing. The forces used to do it years ago. I wanted to be a policewoman and was told I would have to wait for 1 year or I could go into communications in 3 weeks. I told them that it was the police or nothing for me and funny old game I got a slot 2 months later. Its all to do with Quotas me thinks.

Lets face it your life effectively goes on hold whilst you train to reach your goal. Passion and determination go a long way to helping you succeed. If you are pushed in a different direction how keen are you going to be then.

All I want right now is a confirmed place on an access course. I don't want to be told that I have to wait till enrolement to speak to someone who is going to give me 10 mins of their time.

It's a calling, don't care what they say xxx

Great attitude, hun. Don't let them beat you!! Many, many of us hjave had these very same attitudes, it doesn't help and it is not constructive!!

I went to get a prospectus form the uni and was told it was not worth applying as the course was so heavily oversubscribed, I contemplated this for a few days as I did not know what I know now! anyway I went for it and here I am!!

Go for it, lots of people get in every year, never mind what they think what do they know?

When i first started my access course in sept last year we had a careers talk, She spent the next half hour trying to talk us out of midwifery ...i have to say that many students did change their minds...perhaps they were not serious about the job ???

But those of us who are determined will demonstrate this by sticking with our choice and seeing it through till the end !!!

Student midwife here i come ...!!!

I have to admit i found that at certain points at access i thought they were trying to put us off - constant stories of how hard it is and how many applicants etc - i was just very firm and when my tutor worked out that i wasn't putting nursing as a back up she was very supportive.

i had an interview with one uni where i was asked as she didn't have enough places for midwives if i wanted to be a nurse as she'd offer me a place there and then - said no and was offered a midwife place!?! think they are just testing us

i'm like many others i wouldn't have stood a chance without access so hopefully its all just a vicious rumour
