Default Access denied for potential midwives

I heard yesterday that some colleges were not going to take people who want to do midwifery on their access course.

I think if this is true then this is appalling, it is obviously because midwifery is so competitive and they want to keep their success rate for progression to university up but it is denying people the opportunity to even try.

Look how hard they tried to put us off RG!
It is appalling, they should be supporting and helping, not criticising and denying people the chance of doing what they want to do... It makes me really mad sometimes; Access was the only way I was EVER going to be able to study midwifery and to think of people having that chance taken away from them really annoys me.

That's the case for lots of people, myself included, I could have taken other courses for recent study but there was no way I could afford A Levels or anything like that. It really annoys me, I hope it is just a rumour but I posted this not to scare people off trying for access but just to warn them, to gauge their college's reaction to midwifery and perhaps say they want to do midwifery or nursing, so they don't get turned down, not that people should have to lie, it's just wrong!

Hi, when i had my access interview i was told i could do it and try for midwifery. Also said i'd have to put nursing down too though, as probably won't get into midwifery!
It's not on, they almost put a downer on us from square one...i don't want to be a nurse!! x

That's absolutely terrible, especially as many, many very successful midwives started out as Access students!!

I, too, hope it's just a vicious rumour; to have to lie just to get on an Access course is horrible! Although, saying that, many of the students on my course were encouraged to apply for Nursing through UCAS as a 'back-up' option as well, so it doesn't really surprise me!

We were told not to put down nursing and midwifery as you'd be questioned about it. If you want to be a midwife then you want to be a midwife, not a nurse. Hmmm, different colleges, different advice! I do hope it's just a rumour, it'd be a shame if it's true.

My course tutor for access told us midwife to be students that to not apply for nursing aswell as midwifery as that will not get you an interview as it shows you are undecided in which carrer path you wish to take. This does make sense as my view is nursing is totally different to midwifery. Some aspects of care may be the same but we were told that the application for midwifery would not be considered.

Actually I am now entrigued and interested to know if anyone has actually applied for nursing and midwifery on same application through UCAS and been offered an interview for midwifery and have been successfull in gaining a place???

My course tutor also told me that when she went to a meeting with the heads of universities and other tutors from access courses in wales, another tutor told her that none of his midwifery students were successfull (not sure wether they had interviews) and he had told them to apply for nursing also as backup as the midwifery degree course is so hard to get on to.
Our access had four students apply for midwifery, with 3 getting places! Fab!
Even if I had been told to apply for nursing aswell as midwifery, I would have not. It is not what I want to do - so whats the point!?

The midwifery admissions tutor for Cardiff also said at last years open day that she would not choose candidates who had applied for both as she had so few places to give she had to 'put her money' on the candidates who seemed most sure that midwifery was for them and were not undecided between midwifery and nursing.

Surely this can not happen.....my college also tried to put me off,
this is discusting I don't see how college can get away with doing this............its all about money and sucess rates,
I just feel sorry for future wannabes....

you just watch in a few years it will be in the news that the counrty has a shortage of people entering into midwifery.......

this makes me so angry you should be free to choose, your own career path and not forced into nursing.
