Started my work experience today!

Hi all I started my week long work experience today at the trust I am going to placed with come Sept when i start! Sooo tired now (as been up since 6:30 and so not used to seeing that hour! lol) but raring to go again tomorrow. Well here is how it went.....

Day 1

Today I was placed on the high risk postnatal ward (c sections, aneamic ...) I did alot of bathing babes for mums who had their c sections that morning. Observed a lot of blood pressures being taken and also witnessed a couple of 2 day postnatal checks being done.

The ward was so busy. I started on the ward at 12 noon (so much paperwork to fill in before hand!) by 2 o clock there had been 4 c sections brought in and 2 more due down and delivery suite was basically full! Arrgghh so much more busier than i thought!
I am back on this ward again tomorrow form 9 til 5. Wednesday I am on antenatal and fetal medicine, Thursday I am on triage (was told might see a birth on there as the midwives flit between delivery and triage) and Fri I am on low risk postnatal.

I am preparing myself for a busy day tomorrow as i was warned by the midwives that they eased me in softly today.

What a fantastic start, scary but at least you get the chance to do this before you start Uni so that by the time you go out on placement you have some idea of what to expect.

Hey day 3 now!
I was so tired yesterday after day 2 i went to sleep at 8:30 lol!

Day 2 was roughly the same as day 1 as on same ward.

Day 3 was good I was in antenatal and the fetal medicine unit. I spent most of my day on fetal med (viewing scans of high risk moms) I got to see ALOT of twin scans which was interesting as one ladies twins were basically fighting in the womb which was quite funny to watch the one kept sitting on the others head lol! We were giggling at this. But also had a lady in who had reduced fetal movements with a twin pregnancy and when scanned both babies were dead..... this upset me but i was brave and didnt cry although i felt like it!
I got to see a venflux (if thats how its spelt lol) fitted and didnt the mom yelp!
Going on Triage tomorrow will keep you updated xx

Ahh bless you hun, the poor women!! You will be ready for those sorts of experiences when you start soon. What is a venflux?

Think you mean a venflon? It's the needle inserted into the hand to attach IV drips etc to. Sounds like you're having a fantastic time and some great learning experiences.

Day 4 i was on triage and delivery. When i got there a lady was contracting 2:10 on triage ward (as had been induced night before) so i ran her a nice bath and we took her over to delivery suite at 1 ish at this point she was contracting 3:10. I was told she wont deliver on my shift bit gutted but kept my chin up... guess what she did! At 2:51 a little bundle of joy entered the world. It was such an amazing moment and I am off to postnatal today to work so will see her again today. She kept thanking me but i didnt do anything lol.
I got to see 2 inductions being done using a tablet up the vagina but neither lady went into labour whilst i was there. I was just happy to have one xx
