Well..... its getting close now .... I have seen around the site from various threads that you are nervous and excited..... and some of you are beside yourself with worry...
I thought perhaps some top tips to get you all ready and raring to go might help focus your thoughts! Firstly, everyone is worried. Its new, different, new people, new places, new things to learn etc etc you are all in the same boat as it were. Friends ![]() Try and locate fellow students at your uni via SMNET. There are social groups, threads and of course our student mentor scheme. Having a friend or two before you start can really help with making you feel more settled and confident about embarking on your new life! If there are none at your Uni here, I think we have most Unis covered now... but if there are any gaps then let smwife and ollybolly know and they will see what they can do to grab mentors from your specified uni. Remember, when you start there will be 20-30 new people for you to meet so you will soon find a cohort bud http://www.studentmidwife.net/groups/ http://www.studentmidwife.net/studen...mentor-scheme/ Uni ![]() Is exciting. Yes there will be hard work and yes you will be expected to give your all but you know all that dont you?! Something you may not know about Uni is how 'safe' it feels. You are cocooned in this institution that will take care of you. You arent embarking on a new life alone, you are embarking on learning new skills and abilities in the saftey of a large insitution that does care about you. You will have lecturers, personal turors, student reps, welfare staff - all name of people who will be there for you. Preparing for Uni ![]() Well as you can see all over the site now there are threads about what to wear, what books to buy, what clinical tools to get. The SMNET tool bar is a research tool that means your research time is reduced massively as one search with automatically search all the salient midwifery sites. http://www.studentmidwife.net/studen...olbar-new.html The SMNET Academic calendar, with salient midwifery dates, space for shift times and term dates aswell as beautiful imagery and quotes from your lovely lovelies here on the site. FREE! SMNET Academic Calendar! The SMNET Educational Resources section - have a good look through this - its has a comprehensive glossary of midwifery terms, aswell as educational links, videos and information on midwifery history. http://www.studentmidwife.net/midwif...inition-terms/ http://www.studentmidwife.net/midwif...source-videos/ http://www.studentmidwife.net/educat...les-and-links/ The SMNET Getting Familiar with Midwifery Workbook A good way to get familiar with the basics before you start. Checked as accurate by our ver own RM Dory. Contains;
And remember that we are here 24-7 with members from all around the world who will be here for you through the next 3 years/18 months/4 or 5 years. Offload, laugh, cry, seek help, advice, guidance... you name it we can cover it here. You're not alone, theres 2000 people out there many of whom are feeling like you right now, or have felt like you have and they are all here for you. I hope those worriers among you are feeling a bit less anxious now. You can do it Jxx

The calendar is wonderful. Can't wait to print it off!
Thanks so much for your words of wisdom, J, it certainly does help to know that there are people on here who totally understand how each of us are feeling. I shall be sticking like glue to this site over the next three years for more inspiration, tips and advice! Thanks xx |

Aw, TallPoppy that's fab! I feel so calm about starting uni now, you are all part of my extended support network. Having been to uni before, I am well aware of many of the pitfalls and difficulties. I did not finish my course so it was not without considerable thought that I decided to train as a midwife. Studying at degree level again scares the hell out of me, but I have done everything possible this time to make sure I am prepared emotionally for this. I want to be a midwife and if that means doing a degree, then so be it.
