1st day as Maternity HCA

Hey just wonderin what is the role of a midwifery HCA and what the difference between this and a HCA on general ward. Obviously it is extended role but would be gud 2 know b4 startin on the wards!!! lol

Hi girls! Wow, so many questions!!
I have no idea what my job role is in a nutsehell lol! Anything and everything by the looks (within certain limitations of course no misconduct here!), I have been in theatre for most of my time- probably just to build confidence and be certain I know what Im doing when let loose without a mentor! In theatre I have to do the instruments check- counting before, during and after, same with large mops and small swabs, and also with blades and sutures, have to check how many go and how many come back and write it all on a board. Also record the time the spinal/ epidural is put in, when it starts working, time of incision, time of delivery, time of closing and time at the end of procedure, phew! Also gown and mask midwives, surgeons etc, and then basically just tidy around to make sure nothing is in the way whilst being uber careful not to touch anything sterile. Mad stuff!
Havent really done much on postnatal apart from beds, collect notes, send bloods off etc. Been brilliant so far am really enjoying. xx

Ha I know! My head is banging after today! Prob just seems like loads at the mo cos it's so new, dont feel pressured or anything though, everyone has been so helpful etc, and it doesn't matter if u are just a human and dont get things 1st time lol! xx
