Screening
Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia- Offer screening pre-conceptually.
- Offer all pregnant women screening for sickle cell and thalassaemia.
- Offer screening by 8-10 weeks of pregnancy.
- Observing local policy, base screening on the Family Origin Questionnaire and blood test results.
- All babies can be screened for sickle cell disorders on the newborn bloodspot.

Down’s syndrome- All women in England should be offered screening
- Screening is optional.
- GP's should receive an annual report of their local screening programme.

Infectious Diseases
- Early screening for HIV, Hepatitis B, Syphilis & Rubella is recommended in each pregnancy.
- All women who have positive screen results are referred for appropriate care.
- Women who require MMR immunization should receive this post delivery, ideally prior to discharge from hospital.
- Babies of affected mothers need follow up and in the case of Hepatitis B, a course of vaccination.
Fetal Anomaly
- Consent should be obtained, by the person making the referral for the screening test, before the referral is made.
- Dating scans should take place after 8 week and before 14 weeks.
- Anomaly scans should take place between 18 and 20 weeks.
- Women should be aware of the limitations of ultrasound scans.
- Anomalies can be seen on any ultrasound scan

Newborn Hearing
- 1/2:1000 babies in the UK are born with a permanent hearing loss.
- Early identification is important for speech, language and social development.
- All babies in England now offered hearing screen at 0-5 weeks of age.
- Babies referred from the programme should receive full audiological assessment within 4 weeks of screen.
- GPs notified of screen referrals by letter.

- Two full physical examinations are recommended. The first by 72 hours, the second at 6-8 weeks old
- The examinations include a full general physical examination & detailed examination of; eyes, heart, hips, and testes
- Examinations are performed by a trained and competent healthcare professional.

- Blood spot currently screens for; PKU, CHT, Sickle Cell disorders (Cystic Fibrosis and MCADD in some areas only).
- Screening is recommended but parents may decline one or all of the tests.
- Babies found to be affected are referred for appropriate timely care.
- Parents receive all results by six weeks.
