Default Elective placements

I wonder if anyone can help with a question I have been wondering about please?

I know we get chance in our final year to arrange an elective placement, either to visit and study midwifery overseas, or to spend time somewhere you would like here in the UK. But what I was wondering is....do you have to fund all of this yourself if you decided to go abroad? I know there are places like the Iolanthe Trust you can apply to for help, but just wonder if you get finance to help towards the costs from anywhere other than this?

hi there!
I am off to india next year with a large group of health students (midwives, nurses, child nurses, mental health, ODP's and OT's. This is a orgainzed trip that our uni does each year to a small misssion hospital in Kerela, for 16 days, but we have to fund our own place, we need to fund flights, food and accom (which is cheap), and our own travel insurance.

The same can be said for elective placements if you fancy somewhere nice and sunny you need to fund it yourself. so its time to get saving... personally I have lots of bits and bobs going on ebay and will be doing a few boot fairs to help with costs.

I have not decided where I would like to go for my elective yet! but if you can fund it the world is your oyster.

Thanks for the information Puddleduck,

That is what I thought, but just wanted to make sure I was right. I guess I will be staying in this country for mine then when/if it comes.

The Albany practice in London is ace - that would be a good placement. Or up in the Outer Hebrides or Highlands of Scotland.

We were told about the Albany practice in uni last week, and it sounds really good, I checked out their website, it makes impressive reading. I am going to keep that in mind. Thanks for that KS. x

One of our current 3rd years did hers with the Albany Midwives, she spoke about it at our recent International Day of the Midwife conference, she really seemed to enjoy it. One of them also did their elective with travellers, which was also interesting to listen to. Others went to Canada, Australia and India, though the Indian experience was quite upsetting

Sounds great Freefall, lots of variety there, I don't think I could go to India, as you say it would be too upsetting.

I'm sure I read that Salford can give up up to £1000 towards an elective placement abroad??
