It just seems an impossible situation, the units appear to be running on a 'good will' policy at the mo don't they? 3 of our matrons have just lost their jobs after dedicating 85 years service between them, a crying shame.

Ummm.... let me think...

"Access to the RCM Library, the largest specialist library of its kind in the world. It contains all the main midwifery and obstetric journals, books and reports that you’ll need. We have access to the RCN and BMA library collections too. We can give help and advice on literature searches, and even provide literature searches if you want to supplement your own. We also operate a postal service for those who can’t visit the library in person. Click here to view our full range of services.

The monthly RCM Midwives Journal and quarterly RCM Evidence-Based Midwifery Journal. This journal will provide additional information and knowledge you may require to support your studies.

Information and advice from the RCM’s educational staff, who monitor and influence midwifery education.

Access to the RCM’s policy and discussion papers, identifying midwifery best practice and developments for the profession.

A first class trade union service: you will have access to RCM officials who, as practising midwives, will give you expert representation and advice on both professional and trade union matters. We also have a formal agreement with the National Union of Students (NUS) to look after your interests.

The RCM has published, jointly with the RCN, UNISON and NUS, Tomorrow's nurses and midwives: a charter for nursing and midwifery education (1999). A limited number of copies are still available free of charge from our publications department.

Direct contact through your local RCM branch with working midwives, who can provide advice and support as well as tell you about the pitfalls and pleasures to come!

Medical malpractice insurance: carry out midwifery duties during your clinical placements, secure in the knowledge that RCM student membership insures you against legal liability for damages caused by accident or malpractice. If you are appropriately qualified, this insurance will extend to your employment as a registered nurse in the NHS while you are still a student midwife.

Personal accident cover: workplaces can be hazardous - should the unexpected happen, RCM student membership offers the legal and financial support you will want to rely on.

A free 24-hour telephone counselling service (calls charged local rate).

Access to additional information via the members' section on the RCM web site.

To help you settle into your new career, as a newly qualified midwife you are entitled to three extra months at the reduced student membership rate of £1.67 per month at the end of your training. During this time you are entitled to all the benefits of full membership of the College".

If you havent joined up, I would now if I were you..... membership application form ...

Medical Malpractice Insurance: I think it's this one but if I am not mistaken, you are only covered from the period of time that you were a member, so therefore if anyone were to try to take you to court for a case, and you happened to have not been a member during the time the event took place, then you will not be covered.
Also, if you are employed by a Trust, you are covered by the Trust's vicarious liability.
Additionally, if you intend you practise independently, you will not be covered by this insurance.
I'm happy to be corrected.

I went to the student conference last year and they refused to discuss the job situation and also their slant on formula advertisements-however I also feel we should be supporting womens choice on the way they choose to feed therefore I need information to tell them-not which is best but what it contains etc .. But I do like the RCM journal and it is cheap for a student x
