2 - one to look after mum after delivery and one if the baby should need any help at birth. Also 2 needed in case of shoulder distocia (sp?) or any other comps that may arise.

For the delivery, two, one for the mum one for the baby. However, some independent midwives work solo and only call a second if they anticipate a need, so it's obviously not a law.

2. both to assist the birth if necessary. after birth, one to deal with any baby problems, one to deal with mum?? Possibly one to take notes?

ideally two- hopefully to provide support and assistance to the first midwife, help her clear up and help her with any difficulties.

but, according to the lady from AIMS yesterday (very controversial) the presence of 2 midwives was because homebirths were cheaper than hospital births, and so the trusts sent out 2 midwives 2 bump the cost up!!! dunno if i believe this though....
