first stage- usually described as from beginning of labour until fully dilated- split into latent- 1-4 cms, and active 4-fully
second stage- full dilatation until expulsion of baby- characterised by descent and emergence from the birth canal. third stage- the separation and expulsion of the placenta.

2nd - baby born 3rd - delivery of placenta 4th - tea and toast?!

first - cervix dilates
transition - just before the urge to push - the lady usually feels she can't go on! second - baby is pushed out third - expulsion of placenta
