I do think this subject is potentially very complex, and it is one that warrants careful consideration by all of us, especially within the career we have all chosen.

I am fully in agreeance with it and good points have been made, I do think though it is exceptionally difficult to keep private your online persona as the longer you are a member of an online forum, the more likely others are to know who you are, then become the issues of confidentiality.

Whilst I don't doubt I have maintained the required level of anonimity not only of myself, but more importantly of my trust hospital and those women with whom I have played a part in their care; the subject does leave me a littel concerned tbh.

I guess though we as student midwives are learning to deal with these issues, I had thought it more important for midwives, perhaps I had got this wrong as it stands to reason we all need to be aware of these concerns now, as we begin training and onwards into a midwifery career (hopefully)

Thanks again for your post, J. It has certainly set me thinking as to what and how to deal with this

You dont need to worry about other members getting to know you over time, thats actually a good thing! What you need to be aware of is how you conduct yourself, so not discussing your Trust, clients, colleagues etc and most definatley NOT in a negative way. Which doesnt happen here, we have strict rules that everyone happily abides by and the moderator team are always on the look out to help you keep on top of that.

In essence, here on SMNET just keep doing what you are doing. Yes, change your user name if you are called Janet Smith and you are infact Janet Smith but other than that take the advice and check over your facebook, bebo etc.

We have almost finished the guideline, I say 'we' Robs done pretty much all of it and he's an absolute star. Will post up very soon.

thanks for clarification J.
It is as smwife said, a complex area,
and it's undiscovered territory really as the internet is growing so rapidly, computer ownership etc, so NMC are really just catching up IMO with how they are going to tackle things, therefore have come down on the heavy handed side really. Which is a shame.
anyway, i think it is salient advice for everyone to take heed off but not to get worked up about. Be sensible and remember confidentiality
that's it really!

This is excellent advice. And with more and more people using sites such as Facebook it is something to be constantly aware of. What I love about this site is that although we are encouraged to express and share it is done in such a way that it doesnt come over as "bitchy" or inappropriate. And Im sure the moderators would be right onto any comments that were!!! LOL!!!
It would be such a shame to get through all that hard work whether it be three years or 18 months only to have it taken away due to a dodgy piccie.
One way around some of these things is to limit what certain "friends" on these sites can see of your profile (for example people who are "friends" with lecturers or mentors) and it is also possible to set your profile to private so that people who are not added by you cannot see your profile.

Am also so in agreement with Wanabemidwife!!! I dont have any children but the course alone has meant a severe lacking of bad behaviour or debauchery!!! Probably a blessing in disguise!!!

Thanks for informing us. Its something we should all be thinking about.
I do feel that you should always be how you would be if you were talking to some one face to face, even when your on websites and forums.
