| Hi Josie I just found this announcement and wondered what you thought of hypnobirthing? I did a presentation on hypnobirthing for my access course and after reading the book, I thought it seemed fantastic and the success stories I found seemed to back up the theory. However, when I brought it up at the group discussion at my interview for Glamorgan, the tutor was very dismissive, her attitude was that childbirth was extremely painful, end of story.

| It's sad that some people lose their enthusiam and open mindedness they possessed when they themselves started and sadder they cant encourage those traits in new students - shame.

| Hi Racheal, We had a hypnobirthing study day at the unit I work at, following one of our very well respected and more experienced midwives looking after a labouring primip. When the young woman came in, the midwife found it difficult to gain any idea of where she was in her labour - or even if she was in established labor, by watching for her behavioural cues as we normally would. She decided to just watch and wait, dimmed the lights, had a listen in to the FH from time to time, and was still scratching her head. Then the woman looked at the midwife, told her that it was time to push now, got down on the floormats, and had a baby about half an hour later. The midwife was amazed - it was only after she discovered that the woman had been using natal hypnotherapy CDs through her pregnancy

| I really think it ought to be more well known in this country. And that all midwives should at least know about it, if not be trained as practitioners.

| We have a midwife who does private practice in hypnobirthing, and also uses it on the ward, she'll bring them down to delivery saying- sorry only got her to 7!! She's really good, but the problem is its totally private and you don't have the opportunity to "watch her at work" and pick up tips etc... But I'd love to go to this, it looks great.

| We have had this discussion several times in NCT circles. I am quite sceptical about the "training". I don't think it's very realistic to be saying to women "childbirth is not painful". I think it's good to be able to view that pain in a positive way and to have faith and self-belief that your body is designed to give birth and that you can and will do this. From a discussion just yesterday, I understand that there is a difference between "Hypnobirthing" (- which states that birth is not painful and discourages women and their partners from thinking about pain and considering anything to do with pain relief) and "natal hypnotherapy" (- which talks about the pain being positive, about you staying in control, coping well with each contraction as they come etc...). The latter seems far more realistic and helpful.

| I don't know, the theory seems very sound to me. The fight or flight reaction causes blood flow to be restricted to 'non essential' organs or those not needed for either fight or flight, the uterus obviously not being one of them, blood flow is restricted, the uterine muscles don't get the oxygen they need ergo, lots of pain. I can totally see why the fear of pain in labour causes actual pain. If childbirth is indeed painful even without the reduced bloodflow to the uterus, I imagine it would be a lot less bearable. I have read the hypnobirthing book by the founder, Marie Mongon, and she does stress that hypnobirthing does not guarantee painfree labour but can make it comfortable. Also, as I did a presentation on this subject, I searched for non-biased testimonials and I found a great number of news stories with women saying that they had virtually painfree births thanks to hypnobirthing but I could not find a single article on it not working for women.
