Default First read???

Which book/publication would you recommend for the fist read when just starting to apply to become a midwife?

I want to start reading to get some knowledge, but dont know where to start - obviously nothing too complicated!

Your recommendations would be gratefully received

The Practising Midwife journal, fantastic. A very easy read, lots of inspirational authors. Interesting research/issues.

And here too! there are many threads to aid your learning, lots of advice available aswell.

Have you applied?

If so or you are in the process of good luck!

Ooh and welcome!

I agree with smwife about The Practising Midwife journal, I subscribed to that before I applied, and I found it very useful, but easy to read and understand.

I found The Baby Catcher to be a very inspiring book, and have read it a few times, and I also like Shadows of the Workouse too. These aren't journals, but are about midwifery in the 1950's.

I am reading Spiritual Midwifery at the moment, and I am enjoying that too.

I agree with the lovely ladies above, I have enjoyed all of those books. Babycatcher is a classic and has lots of different stories of different births, its a great read.

We are so lucky to have this site now as I never thought of reading a midwife centered book(seems stupidly obvious now) before my interview etc. I read good detailed books for expectant mothers, "what to expect" was fantastic for a summary of what you will expect to see as a midwife and also helps to undertand the pyschology of mothers and fathers which is equally important in this practice I feel. Plus it show antenatal and postnatal worrys and situations you will face.

Thanks for all your help ladies. Ive been and reserved the books you have suggested from my local library so will have plenty to get started with. Couldn't find the 'The Practising Midwife journal' - is that the same as the magazine?

Regards

Sonya
