I to did the access course, I think our group is split 50/50 ish with access and A-levels, I found it really prepared me well, as I had the same amount of work to do in uni as I had at college, so my first year was hard, but I'd grown accustomed to the pace of it all by then.
I don't think they have any preference on who they choose, its literally the subjects your studying, your personal statement and how well your interview goes, and thats that I think, so as long as you have chosen relevant topics etc.. Its all down to the numbers game from there on. Good luck with hearing some good news soon xx
