Hi Lian,
Im currently doing the DLC and im finding it quite good.
I had my interview for uni a couple of weeks ago and they seem more impressed when u tell them you are 'distance learning' because you need a lot more motivation to do it.. no teachers at college telling you deadlines, you just have to do it!!
but ive had a conditional offer from uni saying aslong as i pass this Access course, im in, but like Coffeebean has said, just check with the uni's you want to apply to, to make sure they'd accept it. Im sure most would tho.
If you do start, let me know and i'll help as much as i can.
take care
Em :-)

I am thinking of doing this, starting in October. I am doing an OU ocurse in health and social care, but would like to get some science element in. Its either that or human biology with the OU - I am undecided. Think the Access may be more relevant though! and looks v interesting. Not sure I would NEED 2 such courses, but hey, keeps my mind active whilst I wait to apply and then start! dont want the old brain gathering dust...

Talking Re: Has Anyone Done A Midwifery Access Course With The Distance Learning Centre/dlc?

Hiya. I'm currently doing Access to midwifery via the DLC.
I've just finished my second assessmnet now and I'm really enjoying it so far!!
I'm so glad I decided to do it though as it means I can spend more time with my daughter. Actually found through this site in a thread.

I did Access at my local college too but i much prefer it through DLC. Would highly recommend!
The work is fairly easy and you have a tutor who is always on hand.
It is £40 a month but I find it easier as I don't have to pay for travel or dinner etc which used to cost a fortune when I was in college.

There are a few people to have received offers for uni's doing this course. I think uni's like it because as someone (sorry can't remember who) said they like the fact you just have to get on with it, you have to be disciplined and self motivated, plus its Access to Midwifery and not Access to nursing or sciences etc. Good luck anyway and if you need any more info feel free to ask x x x x

Hiya
I'm just looking at all the options at the moment - was considering access part time at college which will take 2 years but not sure if I can get a place this year plus would still be paying childcare for my youngest (over £100 a month) so was looking at DLC as it's £40 a month and you complete the course in your own time. I would imagine you'd need to be very disciplined though. I'd check with your preferred uni as the full access course through DLC is only 60 credits whereas some uni's are looking for more credits because of the high volumes of applications they get.
This is the link which SarahLou (thanks hun!) sent me earlier and I've been having a good look at the site!

Hi there

I have just introduced myself in 'introduce yourself' section last night, but thought i'll post a message here as this thread presents me with a few questions to ask, if you dont mind!

I have planned for a while to do Biology A-level evening course at a local college, and was just waiting for the prospectus to come out at the end of this month so i can apply, in order to begin this September. However i just spoke to someone at the college and they told me that they pulled biology due to lack of funding. I was sooooo gutted. This was last week. Since then i have done some research and was interested in doing the distance learning aspect of it, particulary because i am deaf, and struggle with lectures. I was just trying to decide which insitution to work with. Then i read this thread. This threw spanner in the works! So now, i have to ask myself, which is better, A-level or Access? I would appreciate your thoughts on this?

Just to update you with my education achievements - I have A-levels in Sociology, and Psychology, both with A grades, critical thinking at D, and general studies at B. I also did travel and tourism when i was 16 for a year (AVCE) i was hoping all this would be enough to enter the midwifery degree but it doesnt seem to be the case as science is needed. :-(

I just realised i cant read previous posts while im replying, so i cant comment on the other posts - i cant remember who said what! sorry!

Annie

Hello Annie

There is no answer really as to which is best... a levels or Access... It depends on the person!

I did Access simply because my A level grades were too old and not good enough! Access itself I really enjoyed. Mainly because I got to study many relevant subjects all at once but in less depth than taking full a levels. I like to have a bit of everything! I believe with DLC you'd do your modules separately? Access would cover the science you need

I agree with LittleNoo, I like how the access has a variation of subjects and they aren't too difficult.

With the DLC we cover subjects such as Child Wefare and Development, Psychopathology and Self and Social Skills aswell as Human Biology.

Some access courses carry more points than others and some Universities want more points than others so it's worth looking into that too.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do, let us know how you get on.
