Think these guys pretty much summed it up! I find skills for midwifery practice by johnson and taylora total bible though, it breaks down everything from VE's to palpation in bullet points and tells you why we do them in a very easy way, also an anatomy and physiology book is useful, either a general one but you can get those specific to midwifery.

I don't know if pharmacology (drugs) is covered in your first year but on our course it is- the midwives pocket formulary you'll find them all in the SMNET bookshop here Midwifery Books and More this is a good one and its quite small so you can take it on placement with you and look up any drugs you hear the name of.

As for general books there are quite a few that are kind of academic, but as a basic all the ones aforementioned; babycatcher, the midwives tale, a midwives story and spiritual midwifery are all brill. Spiritual midwifery is particularly good as it has the most wonderful stories in it and also a load of anatomy and physiology and interesting useful stuff in the back!!

sorry for my waffle- but hope that helps xxxx

Sorry Angie,

I can't comment on that book as I haven't seen it, but we get lots of info on breastfeeding at uni, so didn't see the need for yet another book lol. x
