Question I'm confused!

Help!
I'm confused!
I really want to study to become a midwife.
I've looked online at my local University and the course that I wanted to apply for has been stopped.
I was hoping to apply for the Diploma rather than Degree as I left school with 9 A-C grade GCSE's but didnt further my education.

I have a NVQ 2 which is obviously not sufficient to apply for the Degree course

So now I'm not sure what to do...
  1. Apply at my local college to do A-Levels in the evenings (I have 2 young children) so I can apply for the Midwifery Degree
  2. Apply to do a nursing diploma then do the 18month course for Midwifery
  3. Do an Access to Midwifery course with DLC
  4. Something else!
What are your thoughts?
Thanks in Advance,

Chelle xxx

They are phasing out the diploma across the country. So its not just your local uni.
They are also phasing out the 18mth conversion course. The overall idea is that all future midwives are at degree level ( I think).
If i was you i would do the access to midwifery course as it connot be any more relavent !! A-levels are at the same grade academically speaking but access is the better option (imoa)
If this is wrong then feel free to correct me XXX

Hi, thanks for replying
TBH I do think I'd rather do the Access course as it's midwifery relevant and think I'd really enjoy it...As I'm limited to the one Uni I'd better double check they'd consider the access course as I know all Uni's differ??

Thanks again xx

I currently study the access to midwifery with the dlc and love it - you can work in your own time and get loads of support from tutors. All the uni's I am applying to accept the course so hopefully you wont have any trouble with that but definately double check as some Uni's ask for additional units/credits. Any q's regarding the course with dlc pm me I'd be more than happy to help. Remeber that getting onto a midwifery course is just as much about what you have done to research the job and gain experience as your academic results, try reading plenty of journals and online and maybe try getting some work experience with your local hospital or nct group - it can be difficult to get experience in this field but if you can get it you will find it really helps your application

I'm in exact same situation, im currently waiting to hear from leeds uni abt what they think - whether i should do DL A-level in biology or access to midwifery. as i can only do it in evenings as i work full time, and my local college dont offer either courses in evenings so dl is the only option for me really. im really hoping its not too late to apply for either courses as i want to start the degree sept 2009.

chelle what did u find out from your local uni??

with the dlc - the company that provide the access to Midwifery course you dont have to wait for intake like usual so if you apply now you can start immediately. You can do it ready to start in Sept 09 as you will have just over a year to complete it but I wouldnt leave it much longer as if you have a job as you have said you wont be able to commit 100% of your time so you will need a year.

IcyElement.. If you do Access Leeds expect 54 level three credits with an overall pass rate of 70%

Chelle, Do whatever will suit you. It'd probably be easier to manage Access. does your college not offer it part time?

thanks little noo! have u thought of leeds uni or was teeside nearer to you?? i feel im restricted to which uni i apply to, as leeds is the only one i know with deafstart service.(where they provide interpreters for educational purposes in leeds area only) so really dont want to go to york uni after my bad experience there, although its my local and brilliant uni in terms of social life!! i asked dlc to send me info but they told me to wait till i hear from leeds uni. fair enough. thats great about starting immediately, claire, i cant wait! dont get much stimulation for the brain in the office!

My local college and those within about an hrs traveling dont offer the Access course at all the only way I'd be able to take that course is if I did it Via the DLC .

Would this be a problem ie is it less acceptable to do it with the DLC rather than at college?!

IcyElement - I'm still waiting to hear back! I'll keep you posted xxx
