Default Midwifery in Scotland

Hi everyone,

I live in Glasgow and Im looking into midwifery andtrying to scope out the money situation. I keep coming up against conflicting information and wanted to see if anyone here could help me as saas are taking their sweet time to reply to my questions!!

If you are studying in Scotland, do you only get a bursary or can you get a student loan as well? I've been told Ill defo get the bursary but unsure if I'm eligible for any other funding as I don't have any dependants or children. I really want to do this and the thought of not been able to do it because of money is really heartbreaking!! I currently live in a rented flat just now and my monthly bills come to around £500 and with a bursary alone I've worked out that it leaves me with the grand total of £38 a month and thats not taking into account travelling expenses and general living!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys!!Thanks!!

I am in inverness, and recieve a bursary of around £525 a month, I have two children though. I too recommend looking a the Saas website perhaps that can give you a better idea. Good luck

Hi Shannon

Looks like all you will be getting is the bursary. Check with the uni about hardship funds, sometimes they can give you money if you are struggling. x

Another option would be to get on the nurse bank, then you can fit some shifts in around your time in uni x

Thanks for your advice. This might be a stupid question but what's the nurse bank and how do I get registered with it? Thanks again!

Hi,

Hope you don't mind me butting in but I know that as student midwives we are only entitled to the bursory so no access to hardship funds or anything like that. As for the nurse bank-I'm not really sure how to describe it but basically it's like agency work and you give them days/times you can work and hopefully they will match you up to shifts. I'm sure someone will be able to explain it much better. I think details are on NHS website or you can try private agencies- I believe they are better paid! Found this website for you but google it and see if you can come up with anything else.

Hope this helps.

Hope you find it useful. I'm sure there are loads of sites like it, I will speak to my friend as she is also a CSW in a maternity unit and is on the NHS bank so will see how she got on that. Gd luck x
