Default Adult nursing? Leaving uni?

Hi!
I've just finished my first year at uni (Canterbury Christ Church) doing psychology and early childhood studies. i was kinda thrown into that course because i was undecided what I wanted to do!

I've been thinking since i started I've been doing the wrong course and considering training as a midwife. I've arranged some voluntary work over the summer in a maternity unit to see how it is!

I just want advice really what would be the best thing for me to do. I'm aware that certain unis have places from Sept in adult nursing which i could apply for, or whether taking a year out would be better and applying for next year?

any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

:-)

if you want to be a midwife, don't settle for adult nursing.

i'm not doing either yet (i'm applying to canterbury to do midwifery next year), but from what i've read and heard on here and other sites, midwfery and adult nursing are *completely* different, and if do adult nursing purely so that you can do the 18 month midwifery course afterwards, you'll hate doing adult nursing and you might as well just take a year out and apply for midwifery next year.

obviously, if you really want to do adult nursing in order to become a nurse and not just as a shortcut to midwifery, ignore me and go for it!

oooo another emzie with the same problem haha!

I was the same as you hun! I left school straight from a levels and I was in my first yr of a special needs teaching degree and just wasn't enjoying it, like u i was thrown into it cos i was unsure what to do! School made it seem you had to go to uni straight away, no gap years which I should have done!

I was really unhappy and was thinkin alot about midwifery so I took a risk and just left 3 quarters of the way through. I've taken a year and a half off now, and will be starting midwifery luckily in september, first time applying!

I would say follow your dream even if it means waiting cos you will never settle and will be unhappy again! Use your free time getting experience and earning money for when you will have none haha

A little patience now could save you a lot of waiting later, if you get into nursing this year, that is 3 years before you can do midwifery and if you don't want to do nursing you will be kicking yourself!

If you're impatient to start why not see if you can carry on the volunteering at the maternity unit on a part time basis along side working, I'm sure they would be happy to take you even for just a couple of hours a week, and you never know, it could lead to a job as a HCA/MCA while you wait to apply!

Hey,
I was in the same bout as you, I've just left my degree, 2years after starting, although 2 years away from finishing! I too got into it because I wasn't sure what else to do, as my mum wasn't really encouraging when I suggested midwifery! However after 2 years of hating it, I finally have made the decision to follow what i want to do. So i'm taking a gap year from now until I get in and start (optimistically), I've gotten a job at my local hospital and trying to get some experience with an independent midwife! I also plan to travel and do things that wont be possible when I restart uni. (remember we will only be getting 7 weeks holiday a year!) I'm applying to go to camp america before I leave for uni. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you use your time wisely! Hope u make a decision that you are happy with! Where are you planning on applying???

All the best
