Default Anyone at UCLAN

Hi i was hoping to pick the brains of anyone currently studying at UCLAN i am hoping to apply for entry next year but got some reservations about coping with the shifts with young kids. I was wondering how flexible the clinical placement shifts are???? my other half a PO so on shifts too... cannot see it working if we both have to start work at 7am or something??? How do current mature students with kids cope....please help...

Hi i havent actually started yet but from what i have been told by brighon uni is that clinical placements are not that flexible. You are expected to work any of the shift which can be earlies lates or nights.

Hello!

Not sure about UCLAN but I'll be studying Midwifery while the hubby is a PO. Shifts will be difficult... but what do you expect to do when you're qualified? You should be able to work around him to some extent, but not take the mick! I'll try and offer to do the nights and weekends when he's off or on a tallying shift.. I definitely cannot do an early if he's on a night, or a night if he's on an early.. there would be no one in the house between 6am and 9am! It really wouldn't work! I think if you put yourself available for when you can work, it shouldn't be all that much of a problem to work around the ones you cant (Straight from my unis mouth... will confirm if it happens in Nov!)

Well obviously if I've no one to be with my child, I can't work certain shifts at certain times. I was offered a place at uni with them knowing my OH's profession and I stated at interview I'd need to work around him as he pays the mortgage and will be "keeping" me while at uni. They seemed fine with that providing I did the unsociable shifts as and when I could.

Yes they are flexible to a point usually, if I ever struggled to do certain shifts, or just couldn't get the childcare, you sometimes got sarcastic remarks such as what are you going to do when you qualify? I would simply tell them .. Well I'll be earning money then, and will be able to afford childcare won't I? But while I'm here free of charge, a little flexibllty would be great!!

wow - thats amazing - you're very lucky
we were told that we have to pretty much fit in with whats going! we took our place on the course knowing it is unsociable hours
not even any dispensations for people who dont have OH's!
