I am sure you are gutted at the moment but your reasons for making that decision are valid. I would say to cherish every moment you have with your children as time flies by so quickly. Midwifery will still be there in a few years time and maybe you will have more to offer as you will be able to commit more to it and also if you do some volunteering at sure start or the hospital this will help towards your personal statement.
I hope you will stay on here while you are waiting to apply. Big hugs to you!!

Hi there. I was in this position and put it off until my youngest went to school. It was the right decision for me. I did become a volunteer on the maternity ward and loved every minute of it. The beauty of it is it fits in with the time you have available. It was so rewarding and helped when I applied for Uni. Good luck. The time will pass really quickly. x

Good luck with everything. Your reasons for not applying for 09 intake are very valid. Enjoy your time with the little ones and please stick around whilst your waiting to apply xx

I wish I had had the same foresight as you and waited! As for your access - if you feel ready to do something a couple of nights a week - why not access? Depends when you plan to apply for midwifery now - if less than 3 years after your access finishes - theres no reason why you shouldn't do your access now - if I'm honest I didn't find it that relevant anyway - just a means to an end - if that makes sense?!?

I'm in the same situation as you. I've decided to follow my instincts and go into midwifery. I have 2 young children and thought it would be best to wait until they're both at school before starting uni.
So I've decided to get my brain in gear ( and help gain ucas points ) by studying for a diploma. I'm so eager to train now and am so jealous of all of the others who are gaining these valuable experiences. But I know my time will come, just like theirs has. Good Luck

You already have been given great advice as to what to do while you wait so I just wanted to say good luck and to enjoy your time with your children. x

Hi there Cazzaeve. I'm in a similar position; I'm starting Uni in May and will have a 2 year old and a 7 month old by then (my second's due this October), but personally being a stay at home mum was absolutely never going to be an option for me, so it was either work or Uni (hence I chose Uni), but good on you for deciding to spend your children's early years with them.
Although the actual subjects studied on the Access course may not be particularly relevant to a Midwifery degree, I do believe that the organisational skills and academic techniques that you learn as part of the course are very beneficial to University study and for that reason I would say it's probably not worth doing an Access more than a couple of years before starting Uni, otherwise those skills will not be fresh in your mind. Have you tried getting some volunteering experience with someone like SureStart or the NCT? This'll probably be more useful to you than doing an Access course at this moment in time. If you want to do some studying, how about A Levels or similar at evening classes? That way you can ease yourself into some academic work without the heavy workload and stress associated with the Access course? Good luck whatever you decide to do and hope you stick around and let us know how you get on! XX

Hi
I did think about waiting too until mine are a little older (currently 2.5 & 10months, plus we're thinking of possibly another before then too!!! must be mad!), and am also torn between full time or part time learning too if I get accepted for 2009 entry (if I don't wait until 2010 that is). It's so hard when you have kids isn't it, as to what to do for the best. Regarding applications & showing them that you're interested - I went for an open day last week & was told things to strengthen your application include- speaking to midwives, maternity/healthcare asst jobs/ attending midwife open days at local hospitals, reading about midwifery, policies, etc, and reading books & journals too to keep up to date. Good luck, the time will fly by I'm sure - you'll be on here before you know it saying I can't believe my kids are both at school! Sharon x

Thanks alot girls. Only just got a chance to check this thread. I cant believe how lovely you lot are. Im happy with my decision now and know these first years are just to precious for me to miss. Thing is im not one of these people that hates being at home with kids, i love it so i know i would suffer if i left them. Like someone said midwifery will be there waiting for me and in the meantime im reading all things midwifery and hoping to get a health care assistant job. Thanks again girls.xx

All times are GMT. The time now is 10:01.

Basically i have 16 month old son and 12 week old daughter. I have been accepted to do an access course this sept for 2 evenings a week and i was going to apply to uni sept 09. Ive decided after a lot of thought that im going to wait to apply to uni once my children are at school. There are lots of reasons. Mostly because they are only little for a short while and i dont want to put them in childcare and look back and think i missed out on a massive part of my childrens lives. Its so hard. Well i dont know whether to still do my access course or do it the year before i apply to uni as its fresh in my mind and recent study??
anyway ive rambled. Any advice?? Or did anyone else wait to fulfill there dream of becoming a midwife???
Bring it on!
