Hi Clare
No it won't go against you. There are people who have an offer or are at Uni who didn't do any volunteering. I think your personal statement is one of the most important things to get right. Volunteering would enhance your statement a bit but not having done any won't "harm" you either!! Good luck with the access.

Hi clare i didn't have any volunteering experience as i had been doing 5 full time a-levels, i also had no health care experience and was straight out of school and i still managed to get a place even though i was told 'young' people 'hardly ever' get places, so it just goes to show, if you work hard enough and have enough passion they will see that!
good luck and keep us updated, much love xxxx

Hi, I was wondering this, well I want to do voluntary work but I doubt I will beable to until early next year when my daughter qualifys for a free child care place at nursery as I can't afford to pay for it myself. So therefore it won't be on my application when I apply in September!! hmmm x

Hiya! I got my place without having done any voluntary work, at the time my oh was away 6 days a week and with 3 young children and OU study there was no way I could fit in anything else. Of course its great if you can do some but its just not possible for everyone, I think uni's know that. Good luck! x

I think anything that can possibly enhance your application, helps.
Even if its shadowing a midwife at your local GP surgery for the day (if theyl have you!) As many have said, lots get places without volunteering or any relevant health care experience but imo if you can then do. I would have sky dived from Mount Everest to get my place!!

I also got a place without any volunteering or relevant experience, if you can do something, great! but if you can't don't worry about. Do mention that you have spoken to many current student midwives about the course via this site to show you have some understanding of the difficulties and intensity of the course.

I didn't do any voluntary work either. As RG says just be aware of the difficulties, problems and intensity of the course as well as all the lovely, happy bits!!

I didn't have any voluntary or health care experience either, just ten years in an office!
I'd agree with the others; if you can get a bit of experience then go for it, but don't worry too much if you can't. As long as you can prove you understand the role and that you have a mature outlook, then you should be fine. Good luck! X
