Default Another newbie - with a few questions !!!

Hi there

I'm Nicki mum to two & currently thinking about going in to midwifery.
I'm hoping some of you guys might be able to help me out with some info ?

I've been interested in becoming a mw since the birth of my first child (11yrs ago) & feel that now my family is complete & my youngest is about to start school next year I feel the time is right for me to think about it a bit more seriously.

The thing is I'm not really sure where to start. I am in Edinburgh & I know that the entry requirements vary from Scotland to England, I have been intouch with my local uni's to ask there requirements but have been advised against doing the access to nursing course as it's highly unlikely that I'll get in on that & instead advised me to either chance it & do it (although unadvisable) or train to become a nurse then go on to midwifery from there, or get the highers needed to apply straight to uni.

Just wondered what you all thought were the best options ?
The training as a nurse first really isn't an option for me as it's not something I want to do for various reasons.

Any advice would be greatfully recieved xx

usual college advice, I'm afraid and WRONG!!!!!
If anything post-reg nursing is even more competitive as less uni's offer places and these are far less in number too

for example my uni have two intakes for the three year programme a year 60 places, the post-reg is a mere 10 places, and these still have to be interviewed for!!

So the majority of us on here have done access to HE/nursing/midwifery have got in ,despite what advice we received form our collleges

Please, don't let them put you off, yes it is hard to get in, there are many ,many applicants for a small number of places, but why would you not be one of the chosen few??

Oh and welcome Nicki!!

Go for it, do access, do well, apply, be organised, knowledgable and passionate and you are highly likely to be successful!

Thank you for your reply !
One or two people have advised me to go for the access to nursing and to go against the advice, think this is the route I will be taking, thanks for the positivity x

No problem!!

Do take the advice, it is true!

I wish you well, I was told the same thing over and over, I did access, applied and got in first time, as did lots of us on here! If I can make it, so can you!!

from my (very short) experience people are very quick to try to discourage you and tell you its not worth it, i try and smile politely and just get on with doing my best. i don't know if this is helpful to you but i'm currently studying access to midwifery with the distance learning centre (www.distancelearningcentre.com) its all home study althoug i do pay £40 a month in fees. a friend has just completed the course and been accepted on her first try so it is possible! hope that helps a bit xx

Hi Nicki and welcome to SMNet.

I would also say to ignore what the Uni have said; unfortunately you will come across a lot of negativity on your journey to becoming a Midwife, and smwife's right about doing nursing first - there's a lot less conversion courses about than there are direct entry!

I also did an Access course and applied only for Midwifery courses (against the advice of several people) and got offered places at both Unis I applied to! It can be done, and there's no reason at all why you shouldn't get a place.

Good luck; let us know how you get on,

Clare X
