Hello,
Having a moment of self-doubt and could do with some advice off all you clever people who have been through the whole process already. Since I was little I wanted to be a midwife, but when it came to it, at 18 I didn't feel ready for such a responsible career, and followed my second passion, travel, and just recently got a 2:1 in International Tourism. After a lot of soul searching, I've decided that the travel industry isnt for me, and i want to be a midwife! I have good gcse's (11 A* - C), 3 A-Level's (Business-C, English-C, Psychology-D) and obviously my (completely irrelevant!!) tourism degree. Looking around at the entry requirements for the midwifery courses around the UK, I really don't think I would stand a chance of getting onto a course - even though I have done a degree, and can study at a high level, as well as having a passion for the course. Has anyone got any help for me?? Should I apply and hop for the best? Or should I try an access course? Love a very confused Ames x x |

Actually your study results sound fine, when i got accepted i had just got A-level results of ABB but my actual entry requirements had been set at 2 C's and a D.
All of the unis have different entry requirements, so maybe you could try your local ones and see what they would accept? Maybe also getting some care experience would also boost your application if you haven't got any already? If this is truly what you want then go for it! You never know till you try- good luck and let us know how you get on!! xxx

I think the fact you have a degree in the first place is all good.
When I did my access course the only girl to get in straight after was the girl with a degree (in Equestrian Studies) BTW Welcome to this site..............its so cool!!! Filled with friendly inspirational and funny genuine peeps!!!!

I think your quals sound fine - most of the uni's want recent study which you obviously have and your gcse's and a levels seem good enough but I would check with your chosen uni's in case they require a health, care or science subject at a level standard but you do have psychology - a social science so that might be enough - every uni is different. I think the main thing you should do to maximise your chances is research research research, speak to midwives, try and get some work experience or care experience - maybe try looking for a position in a hospital as a healthcare assistant or even better a maternity care assistant or do some voluntary work in the hospital. - All of these things can be difficult to get but if you are able to do any of it - it will strengthen your application I am sure. Good Luck!!

Hi Ames, welcome to SMNet.
It sounds like you're more than academically qualified for the midwifery course. The minimum requirements are generally 5 A-C GCSEs (to include Maths & English) and 2 A-Levels, although as claire said, they usually specify a science subject and some Universities will not accept social sciences. They also require evidence of recent study, which you obviously have. I would definitely contact the Universities you are interested in applying to, as if your qualifications are enough on their own you'd probably be better off spending some time getting some work experience rather than bother with an Access course that you don't need. Good luck; let us know how you get on! X
