Default Chances of getting a job?

Just been looking through some threads which have got me worrying a little now!

How hard is it to get a job after qualifying?

Even if the hospitals arent advertising, could you still send in an application & CV just in case? x

At the end of the day - whatever the job situ is today - 2010-2012 there are thousands of extra midwives promised - where are they going to come from other than folk they're going to train between now and then?!?

A job at the end of all this is pretty much the only thing I'm not worrying about - bless me!

Hey Gemma, well yes it is a worry, but the majority do appear to secure jobs, albeit not always in the trust they trained in. We are in all the same boat, despite the need for more midwives and the supposed recriutment drives, there are simply not the funds available to fill vacant places.

I am hoping things will improve, they certainly can't get much worse!

I guess do your very best as a student (I imagine placements as a three year interview process ) so it is important you try hard and work well, especially during the later stages of the course. Then I'd imagine you and your cohortees would find out about applying for jobs, whether they are vacant or not!

Don't let it stop you, it hasn't stopped us! tbh I don't think about it, it can be a long dark ol' tunnel and I don't like to think there is no light at the end of it!!

Dont forget that once you are quallified you can move abroad, usa and auz are always looking for midwives. thats what im going to do if i cant get a job. People have told me to do general nursing first then do the 18 month top up of midiwery, but i dont wana do nursing, i say just stick to it and eventually you will be needed...even if you are a private midwife

It depends both Oz and NZ can and do take newly qualifieds, I looked into it as I was seriously considering moving to NZ in 2010.

I think it varies, but NZ are as depserate for midwives as we are, only they have the cash to pay them!
