Talking Help about uni and childcare!!

Hiya,

I have my heart set on being a midwife but i am a little worried about being a uni and spending time with my baby. She will be by the time i start uni and she will be in nursery. Basically i was just wondering if someone could explain how the prosses works of being in uni (how many days of the month) and how many days you are on placement. Any information would be much appreiciated x

This varies between uni's so I can only say what happens at mine uni and on this course (what uni are you applying to? someone from there may be on here and can give you more accurate info)

We go into uni 2 and a half to three days per week, this increases with the stage of the course we are at, we do three modules per term with Easter, Summer and Christmas off inbetween. Placement hours are 37.5 hours a week minimum, and vary between nights, earlies, lates, and long days to work those hours. So you may be in every day or three days depending on what shifts you have.

Community midwife means you are working five days per week, with the odd weekday off and working a saturday or Sunday with your mentor. These hours are roughly 9-5.

hth?

How old will your daughter be?

Ahhh hopefully someone from there can reply, though I guess it is pretty much the same for placement hours at least.

My daughter was 3 when I started, she left nursery to go to a childminder though as it was more flexible and cheaper.

The big difficulty is the flexibility you'll need and lots of support form family and friends if you can, whilst I don't have much in the way oif family, I have a fab childminder and a few fantastic friends to call on should I need it and it works both ways.
