Default Shadowing a Midwife?

I really would love to shadow a midwife, I feel that this will give me more of an insight into midwifery also feel that this will give me some experiance as well when applying to Uni.

I was wondering if anyone knows how I go about finding a midwife to shadow? How long you usually shadow them for? I have tryed looking on websites and nothing is coming up with regards to this.

I was wondering if anyone knows much about this and maybe can point me in the right direction? Any ideas will be helpful.

Thank you x

You could try looking at the independent midwives site, you would be able to find the Indie most local to you and then contact her and ask?

Or try looking up your nearest surestart and see whether you may be able to go there?

Its an independent midwife, she said that I might not be present at a birth but she is happy to take me on home visits etc which is really good, also another lady said she would be happy for me to be present at a birth but I need to have background checks etc so im not sure if my college that I will be going to in January can give me some advice on this. Im really excited about this. x

That is just brilliant news!! It will really enhance your application to uni, so ask tons of questions and take a notebook!!

You could go with the other midwife to witness a homebirth, you'd need a CRB clearance (google criminal records bureau) it costs around £30 so you could get it done in order to witness a birth, but it really is not essential, after all birth is only a small part of midwifery! plus when you apply to uni they'll pay to do your CRB check anyway!!

The other thing you could do would be to get a couple of references from people, i.e an employer, tutor or similar professional to vouch for your good character? Just a thought?

Though to be honest, you have been really lucky getting to shadow a midwife, that will be a great experience for you!!

Yes well that will definitly be worth maybe me doing now the (CRB Clearance) as I will definitly want to be present at a birth before I start Uni. I work in a law firm and a lawyer said she would be happy to give me a reference and a tutor at college also would be happy so I will contact them for this so thats good.

Thanks smwife for you advice has been really helpful xxx
