Smile Access to nursing....... (those who have done the course)

Ok, after receiving some great advice from some guys on this board I have decided to apply for access to nursing course next year (as dd starts school then)

However the thing I wanted to ask is - how demanding is it ?

My worry is that as I will have ds starting high school & dd starting primary school at the same time I really need an insight as to how family life may suffer ?

Many thanks x

Hi there Nicki,

I did Access last year and while it does infringe on family life, I would say if you are organised it shouldn't be too much of a problem. My eldest had just started full time school and my youngest was nearly 2. Depending on the times your access course is, you may be able to still drop them off and pick them up from school so they will hardly notice a difference. I did my assignments while the children were in bed, or during half term I would ask my parents to take them out for a day while I got on, but this was just a treat to them so I don't think it affected them that much really.

Well, I don't drive so my parents had to do the school run for me but this didn't really bother the children, my youngest even asked to go to their house on my days off! I was only at college 2 1/2 days even though it was *full time* so I still did the majority of school runs.

Hi Nicki. I'd echo what rainbowgoddess said; it does have an impact on your family life, but as long as you're organised and don't mind making a few sacrifices you'll be absolutely fine.

My son was 5 months old when I started my Access, and by the end he was 14 months old and I was 6 months' pregnant so I can't pretend it was a walk in the park! I used to do all my assignments when he was in bed, sitting at the computer pretty much every night of the week from 7.30 until 11 (didn't get to watch TV or have a social life!).

My parents and husband were a great help, too; looking after Callum at other times when I needed them to, but I definitely think it's doable. A few women on my course had children of school age and because the course was only 4 mornings a week, they were able to do their work while the kids were at school, so it didn't really affect their home life to a great extent at all.

You'll be absolutely fine, don't worry; and just remember that it'll be worth it in the end! Good luck,

Clare X

Hi - i managed with a new baby and a 4 year old - like everyone else says - have a good support network and be organised

one of the big things it will help you to do will be to put things into perspective which i'm hoping will help with uni - i used to be really houseproud and then at christmas i got near to melt down - so i had a really good think about things - did i really need to do my skirting boards every week, would i really be the worst wife and mother if i accepted my mother in law helping out with some ironing every now and then - that sort of stuff

in the end we all get through- keep smiling when its bloody hard and remember why you're there - helped me no end

Saphireblue, your mother-in-law is an absolute angel!!

Although my mum was fantastic while I was doing my Access, and she'll be helping me out no end while I'm at Uni, the one thing she point-blank refuses to do is my ironing!

If your mother-in-law gets bored at anytime over the next few years, I've got a constant pile that needs attention! XX

Scary enough - my mother in law is the complete opposite of the stereotypical mother in law

We get on amazingly well and i love her to bits - thinks that maybe its because my husband is an only child and was quite mature when we met so she had given up on her own grandchildren - i came with a 2 year old and was good enough to produce another fairly quickly so i'm fairly well loved!!
