Hi Naomi!!
So many colleges say this to try and put people off! Have they tried to persuade you to do nursing yet?? In my night class the 4 out of 4 that applied got a place and for that year 11 people got a place!! Obviously as well as the entry requirements you need to have a fantastic personal statement and any volunteering that you do is a bonus. Some people do have caring experience whereas others don't. It is not impossible hun!!

From what I know... every uni is different but they generally like you to have had some experience preferably shadowing a midwife or being on a maternity ward but any voluntary experience within a health care setting would be useful to your application.
Don't be put off by what your college has said. Yes it is a competitive subject to get into but if you're determined and want it enough it is by no means impossible. There is a personal statement section on here if you want to see some examples and there's also a guide of what to include. You can always get someone on here to have a look when you've finished it. Good luck x

yes they have tried to make me go the nursing route!!!!! i dont want to be a nurse though.. a nurse and a midwife are very very different things... I've got an interview tomorrow to see if i can do volunteering at my local hospital on all the wards so i can have that experience, then i will be doing 1-2 weeks in a midwifery led maternity unit like work experience really, then i will try and get the chance to shadow my old midwife, do you think this will be ok? I'm also starting my personal statment now

All good things to do and like Helen has said there is a very good personal statement thread and plenty of volunteers to help you with the statement.

I got in and I had no experience in care or volunteering on maternity (or otherwise), yes it's tough to get in but you seem very determined and that is what they are looking for, someone has to get the places, why not you?
If you don't try you'll never know, that's what I thought and look at me now!

Don't let them put you off, Naomi! Like rainbowgoddess, I had absolutely no care or voluntary experience either and I got a place!
All 3 ladies that applied for Midwifery on my Access course got places, and there's no reason at all why you can't. The work experience and shadowing will be great plusses for you; add a killer PS and you'll be fine! Good luck and you know where we are if you need any help, Clare X

Both of us in the evening class who applied for midwifery got in. The few that started off wanting to go for midwifery that ended up thinking about nursing left... if you have the drive, the passion and the academic requirements.. you have enough to shine xx
