Hi bexster,
It isn't a strange question at all, in fact it is a very valid one. I started the course....as I am sure lots of others have, without ever seeing anyone giving birth. I was so absorbed by what was happening that I didn't really notice any 'smells' or anything like that. I found it all very fascinating. There is another thread about this which you might like to read through, it might help answer your question. Check it out here. 1st birth - pass out?

Hi Bexster,
I'd never seen anyone give birth before I started the training either. I was lucky in a way because I got to see an amazing home birth within my second week of community placement. The woman was standing when she delivered, so I didn't really see much other then the head descending between her legs. I think that was a gentle initiation into it really, and I was a bit more prepared for delivery suite then. I really don't notice smells much - I think it's because I'm usually so absorbed in caring for and encouraging the woman that it's only afterwards I notice smells etc. I'm sure you'll be fine!

Just a tip, I went and looked on youtube! Not exactly the same thing but that last time I saw a birth was on an old video in my child development class. It's a start, atleast you won't be standing there in shock!
