Hi - how horrible for you! I can't really comment as I don't have any experience - but are they brought on by anything particular? What is your GP doing to try and help? It might be worth talking to occy health as they'll be able to tell you the situ re training and panic attacks...
Good luck, keep us posted! x |

Hi Bexster, i used to have panic attacks for no apparent reason. I could not pinpoint why i actually had them, all that i know is they are extremely frightening. I managed to overcome mine by actually learning to recognise when i would be having them. Difficulty breathing, palpitations, light headiness. Some were so bad i actually thought that i was having a heart attack. At first i would have so many in the day i lost count. It could happen anywhere. Waiting to be served in a shop, driving, sitting at home watching T.V. Once that i recognised they were on the way i used to ask myself why was this happening. I then actually used to focus on the panic attack telling myself that is all that it was. I would stop doing what i was doing and take nice steady even breaths, telling myself all the time there was no reason for it. At first it took me a long time to control them, but on the odd occassion that i do have them they are gone before they have even really started. The more that you worry about a panic attack the worse that it will get and you will soon find that is out of control and it will rule your life.
I hope this helps. xxxx |

My brother suffers from panic attacks and are usually brought on by the most random of things, but more recently quite bad cause he thought (with no reason or symptoms) that he was dying of cancer!! It sounds crazy from a non-sufferer but it was really bad for him. He has ended up on medication. He also attended a counsellor and was told to use relaxation tapes.
If your attacks are managed then you should be able to control them whilst doing your training.

Hello My Lovely ;0)
Firstly want to say how brilliant it is that you have taken the first leap of "faith". Now is the time to start believing in you. We all do and you must too. It is very daunting and scary when you are thrust out of your comfort zone but if we remain safe and snuggly and don't allow change to happen then we can never progress. I have suffered panic attacks and I actually thought I was having a heart attack at first. I've had to abandon my shopping trolley in the supermarket and make a quick get away because at times it has become too much but there is light at the end of the tunnel my love. Allow that you are going to have bumps in the road and don't be hard on yourself when they happen. Just see each milestone overcome as a step nearer to your goal. You will make a brilliant midwife and the challenges you are/have faced will allow you to understand and empathise with those in your care who may go through the same thing. Nothing happens without a reason and although at times the things that are sent to try us can be a pain to say the least that which doesn't destroy us makes us stronger. Keep plodding onwards my friend and remember that Rome wasn't built in a day. Be gentle with yourself and treat yourself as you would others who face what you have to face. When we can love and care for ourselves it makes us much more able to love and care for those who need it. Good luck my lovely and remember you have not failed until you stop trying. Much love to you and yours xxx

Awww thank you so much, goddessmomma your comment is amazing and really makes me think and want to beat this.
My doctor has put me on tablets but i have to be on quite a low dose because as soon as i feel them doing anything to me i feel out of control and that makes me panick, stupid really. Ive also just started councilling. Not really sure why they started, im a bit of a perfectionist and like to be in controll so maybe when i moved away from family and friends to a place where i really need to drive (but cant) and stuff mixed with money troubles im out of control so i think thats part of why they started. Hopefully when i start my access course and learning to drive i might feel some of that control come back i hope lol Thanks girls your great

Very true - feeling out of your comfort zone is stressful for everyone but if you are prone to panicking etc it will be worse for you. My brothers started up really bad when he moved home after a break up after 6 years of being together. He wondered why he was stressed!!!

God bless you sweetheart.
It sounds as though you have had numerous changes all happening at once and the control issue is very relevant. But these are things that you are addressing right now and you are making positive steps to overcome the impact they have on your life. Money is a monkey and there are many on this site who will be nodding their head and agreeing with you and totally knowing where you are coming from; me included!! It is difficult when you have dependants, whatever age, but please believe me when I say what is meant to be will be. The challenges you face (although we wish we didn't have them) are character building and each day you will be getting stronger and stronger. The ladies in our care, who will be an eclectic mix, need someone who has walk that extra mile not someone who is just paying them lipservice. When you have been on the bones of your ass it makes you appreciate and understand on a whole new different level. That is not to say that our lovely peeps out there who have not experienced this are unable to empathise because I do believe that everyone who has a calling for this caring profession has gone through some toughfening (please forgive my spelling!) experience/situation and they are more than qualified. Those of us who go for this sort of profession are usually those who have suffered the most in one shape or form. Good luck hun; you can do it.... xxxxxxxx

Sorry for jumping in, I just wanted to say how inspiring I found your words Goddessmomma.
Bexster, my sister has had panic attacks for years and I have witnessed these and appreciate how scary they are....and thats just watching. She started to get control by using a brown paper bag to rebreathe, she hyperventilates and this helps correct the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide, or so I have been told. Hang on in there, its does get better!! |

Yeah i use the paper bag lol, well did anyway, i havnt had one so bad that i have to use it in a few months now though, surely a good sign???
Im normally such a strong person and i have dealt with all kinds of rubbish in the last 3 years, my son had meningitus and was in hospital for a couple of months then loads of other crap and i dealt with it all, i think maybe its a case of the straw that broke the camels back sort of thing. Thanks everyone its good to be able to talk about it, gets stuff off my chest xxx |
