Default Any advice appreciated

Hi Everyone, I'm new here so be gentle!

Here's my current situation:

- live and work in republic of Ireland
- have degree in Information Technology
- am 28
- really really really want to be a midwife!
- thinking of applying to Queens Uni in Belfast (because if I study in Ireland I will have to pay full fees as I already have a degree)
- I presume I wouldn't get the bursary from NHS as I'm not a UK resident even though I would be moving to Belfast for this?
- I have a mortgage so it would be a real struggle if I got the place but where there's a will and all that!

So here are my questions!
- What is the semester length (I understand it's not the same as regular college due to clinical placements)?
- Is it possible to get a part time job to fit around hours in college?
- What's the course in Queens like? Is it very intensive? I ask this because the degree course in Ireland is 4 years long and in UK it's 3 years.

Thanks in advance for any feedback I get!

Hi Moondance, I'm new too! Semester lengths at my uni are 13 weeks, I believe, but they may vary from uni to uni. I haven't applied yet so can't really help with your other questions. Nice to meet you though

Hi, not sure about the course in queens, but I do know that the course im starting you get around 10 weeks leave, we have been told that we will not be able to work part time along side, but i s'pose it depends on your situation, I know i wont as have two small children, but luckily in Wales we get a non-means tested bursary to help. Good luck and welcome to the site

Welcome and good luck!

Sorry but I can't help you with the course information but why don't you try ringing Queens and see what they say?

Thanks for all the replies so quick! I think I will ring Queens soon, it's difficult at work! I was just hoping to hear from your personal experiences on how you survive financially especially those that don't get the bursary. Is it all loans?! I'll keep trying the lottery anyway.

Hey I live in northern ireland and to my knowledge I think that you would still get the full bursary. Asked a couple of nurses I work with and we all think the same thing that you would be living up here and applying to the uni so technically ur term time temporary address would be in the north, hope this helps! xx

On the Queens website it says all students get tax free bursary but on NHS website it says you have to be a UK resident for 3 years prior to starting? Does anyone have a contact for bursaries in Northern Ireland (or is it all processed in England)? So confused!

U will probably get more information if you ring the school of nursing and midwifery in Queens and ask for the number regarding bursaries, have a chat and see what you think.

I know NHS says 3 years but techanically you are on the same geographical island so you would not be an oversees student, you know what I mean? Hope this heps xx
