Default crb?

Hi im just starting an access course for nursing and midwifery, i just was hoping someone could help me. I got cautioned for shoplifting when i was a child 3 times, i was about 11 and im now nearly 25, i would like to know if this will hold me back from studying and practising midwifery? I really want to be a midwife and i will be gutted if it does, ive heard some conflicting stuff on it, some people saying because it was not a violent offence or a serious offence it shouldnt affect it, but ive also heard on the contrary Please help....

Hi Mills

Try not to worry flower!

I used to work for the police and although this isn't my area of expertise, I know enough to think you're probably worrying over nothing! An offence (and you only had cautions not a conviction) are officially 'spent' after 11 years although it may still show on your police record.

Under the Freedom of Information Act you can now apply for a copy of your police record for a fee. Every force now has a Freedom of Information Officer so contact them or look on your force's website. This may put your mind at rest but the CRB check is in place to make sure that we're people who are safe to work with vulnerable people and babies safely...not to persecute you for a silly thing you did 14 years ago!

Oh no what a worry for you, I think you was probably a little older than you think as they wont cautioned you until your 13, well any ways that is beside the point a caution usually lasts between 3 and 5 years, so even at 13 that is spent now and shouldnt affect your chances, I am sure after a discussion with the uni it wouldn't of any way.

My friend did exactly the same thing. She did mention it on her application, because at the end of the day, you're better off being truthful, this will go down well!! She then heard she had an interview and discussed it at interview and needless to say, SHE GOT IN!! So I do think honesty is the best policy here. I certainly wouldnt leave it out, because if they catch hold of the fact that you have, wouldnt think that would go down too well!! Good luck!

It shouldn't be held against you but I would certainly put it down as an enhanced crb will bring up everything, whether spent or not.

My friend had a conviction for credit card fraud 18 years ago and she was really worried that it would stop her getting in for nursing, she disclosed it at the outset and although she did have to have a separate interview to discuss it after her conditional offers came through, she was accepted (at 2 unis!).

It probably won't even appear on your CRB, but declare it anyway. You will not get onto a course if you don't declare it and it shows up. You can get a place if it shows up and you have declared it.
I was having a right panic before I started as have a driving conviction. I declared it, uni weren't even bothered by it and didn't ask anything about it, and it didn't even appear on my enhanced disclosure. But I wouldn't have risked not telling them.
