Talking Pre-Midwife / Access Course Jobs

I notice a lot of people around here have decided to try midwifery after working in other jobs or after having kids and meeting midwives first hand. So just interested to know what sort of areas everyone was working in before getting the "call"!!!

For me I'm currently a graphic designer and a company director. Do not like the business world at all though.

I'm an Architectural Technician/ Contract Administrator, it sucks. I get shouted at by client & contractor, soaked and muddy on a regular basis and those are just the good bits!!!

I 'fell' into this from Uni, and I've known for quite a while that this wasn't the long term career for me, i knew where i really wanted to be but the fear factor was too strong. After having my son though life is very different and he's motivated me to finally make an application.

xx

Hey, i'm a graphic designer/illustrator, and i've got my company too!! How funny! Ever since i had my child i knew i wanted to look after women in childbirth, that was the call! But i do love the creative side of my job too. I've applied for an Access to Nursing course in Glasgow, and try to find opportunities to volunteer in Healthcare. It doesn't feel like it's the right time though, and i think i'll keep gathering experiences until i feel completely ready for the big change in life!

Hi Clem, that's mad! I like the variety of my job but I just don't want to be stuck at a computer forever. Would like a job that makes a difference to people's lives if you know what I mean!

I completely understand, sometimes, when i'm in the middle of designing a brand's identity, i really wonder if my time and energy shouldn't be better spent helping people, I've started volunteering a few weeks ago for the Riding for Disabled charity, horse riding for autistic children mainly, and believe me, those Monday mornings I spend there are a blessing! Why do you think you would want to become a midwife? Have you thought about other healthcare related jobs like art therapist?

Not really clem, I have my heart set on midwifery for the last few years. I think what first got me into it was watching student midwives on some sky channel one day I was off work sick and ever since then I was completely hooked on pregnancy and birth despite having never experienced it myself. I'd find myself reading breastfeeding information in doctor's waiting room and watching anything on tv even remotely related to childbirth - my boyfriend was getting a bit worried!!!

I volunteer for the Make a Wish foundation - I'm called a Wishgranter (how cool is that??! ). It's great meeting so many different kids in all sorts of family situations and seeing their faces when they get their wish granted. It's amazing what some families have to deal with and how positive they are. Really opens your eyes.
