Default Part Time Course at University of Herts

Hi all

Does anyone know anything about the 4 or 5 year part time degree at the University of Hertfordshire?

Until Wednesday I was sure that I was going to apply for the full time course at Northampton but after attending the open day on Wednesday I realised that I'm kidding myself if I think I can do this without a partner or an au pair, as I am a single parent of 2 children age 8 and 6.

We have to work 45 weeks out of 52 and the 7 weeks holiday is just randomly selescted for us so I would need childcare for all school holiday plus we do our placements in 12 weeks blocks - either 7am-3pm, 1pm-9pm or 9pm-7am. All of those would need childcare and sadly I don't know any child minder that start at 6am or finish at 10pm or do night shifts.

I really don't relish the thought of travelling to Hertfordshire or studying for 5 years but it's my only hope!

Any suggestions welcome.

Hi hun, I'm applying to Herts for the 4-5 year route as my youngest will still be two if/when I start so I want to have some time for her and my family too. I know that for the taught part of the course it works out to roughly 21 hours a week (pro rata) but I'm not sure how they organise this at all. I am assuming that the placements will still involve long shifts and nights and weekends but I need to double check on this. The info doesn't seem to be easily accessible on their site does it? Will let you know if I find any more details x

Thanks Mads.

I saw that the taught part was 21 hours but couldn't find any other info, not even the name of someone to contact so I'll phone the switchboard on Monday.

Hi
I think the uni hours are reduced and you don't have to do so many shifts on placement but I believe the hours are still normal shift hours that you would normally be required to do on ward etc (this was explained to someone on the access course with me who was looking at this option at Herts)

Thanks foxym. In that case (unless a miracle occurs in the next year) the dream is over...

I wouldn't give up hope yet, I believe there are a few students who have found childcare that covers night shifts etc and you get 85% of childcare funded by the NHS bursary, it may just be a bit harder to find but I'm sure they are out there!!
