Default experience?!

hi to everyone, im new to the forum and have been so relieved reading all the posts that there are people in the same boat!

i have wanted to be a midwife for a long time and i was unfortunatly not accepted to dundee uni this year. i did not know they only took 25 people a year so i know i did not have enough experience under my belt!

so i have decided to do an access course at college which will guarantee me a place at dundee the following year. this course is very hard to get on to also so i am looking for any experience i can get, i dont want to be paid, i just want experience! i have contacted the hospital but they wont allow me to do anything there as its a sensitive area of care etc. i understand this but i am really frustrated that i cannot get some experience when they want me to have some when i apply for college!

can anyone tell me how they got experience etc?

Hey and welcome, one thing you could try is this website, you can enter your postcode and find an independent midwife who you may be able to shadow for a day or more

Are you sure it guarantees you a place?

You might not get experience in delivering babies but try other groups for ante-natal and post-natal experience such as NCT or local breast-feeding or Surestart groups in your area.

thankyou smwife, i will try that! i was trying to find some independant midwifes but couldnt so thanks very much!

moondance, yes as long as i pass and show that i can do it, i will get a place. the college and uni have excellent links and i will be interviewed by the university before i even get into the college course. they reserve a certain number of places for college students apparently!

You can also try this website for volunteer work www.do-it.org.uk
Can't always guarantee there will be anything specifically linked with midwifery, but on occasion there will be but it is a great site for getting contacts etc. I have used it and have applied to my local trust via this site. You never know!!
Good luck in your search. x
