Default Could do with a bit of advice from the experienced ladies please x

Hi, I have waited for years till the time was right for me to apply to study midwifery and have slowly begun on that road now. However I have heard that it is really hard to get into my uni for the degree course so am doing everything possible to support my application.
I am currently studying K101 (Introduction to health and social care) with the Ou and have also just enrolled on DLC access to midwifery course.
I have read a few threads on here about volunteering, whats the best way to do this, should I just ring my community midwife or Antenatal department?
Also Reading, I love reading, Have just ordered Baby catcher and am going to subscribe to the practising midwife, anything else?
I so want this and am so determined and would just appreciate any advice from anyone really!
Time is not a problem at the moment as I am a stay at home mum x

Hiya Hun ;0) You really seem to be doing everything possible to set you up for your interview and placement. Getting voluntary work is proving to be something I haven't got a handle on yet. I have been applying, via email, to the hospitals and up to just there have been no places. I can't see any harm in contacting both you mention and if not them you need to speak to they would hopefully point you in the right direction. There are threads on here reviewing books. I've never read it myself but "Call the Midwife" is also supposed to be a good book. There is a brilliant thread on the book "Spiritual Midwifery" and I'll leave it up to you as to whether you think it is a good book to order or not. I have it and trying to read it but it is certainly a strange one. Maybe investing in a good Anatomy and Physiology may help you on your way and "Skills for Midwifery Practice" is a great book. Check out the book shop on here because it'll give you an idea what is available and they are usually much chepaer than elsewhere. Good luck hun ;0) xxxxxxxxxxx

If you want it bad enough hun it will come to you.

Concentrate on getting the best grades you can from you courses and start on your personal statement as soon as possible.

For voluntary work you could try getting in touch with the NCT or contact your local hospital (I think HR would be your port of call there!!). Don't be put off if you don't get something straight away, it can be quite hard to come by.

You're right to be reading things, take note of current issues around the wonderful world of midwifery.

If you do all this you'll have as good a chance as the next person. It's all about how prepared you are & how passionate you are.

Good luck with your application x

I volunteer as a breastfeeding supporter - you could try contacting your local hospital and see if they do anything similar, otherwise it sounds like you are doing well. I subscribe to the british journal or midwifery too which is also very good but a bit more expensive

Sounds like your on the right road already!
Voluntary work is great if you can get it, but remember it doesn't have to be in maternity. How you considered surestart?
Sounds like you are doing a great job and working hard! GOOD LUCK XX

You are definately doing all the right things, try all of thsoe options for experience and also this you can enter your postcode and find an independent midwife near to you, they may be able to let you shadow them for a day or more..

www.independentmidwives.org.uk

worth a try, good luck! let us know how you get on?
