An NHS bursary is an annual grant that is not subject to income tax or National Insurance, paid once a month (usually on the third Friday of the month) for the duration of the programme. Degree students may be eligible for a means-tested bursary, where household income will be taken into account, and this will be reflected in your grant. Additional allowances may be made for students with dependents. Students who receive a means-tested bursary can apply for a reduced student loan. Hardship funds are available which offer assistance to students in serious financial difficulty.

Who is eligible for an NHS funded bursary?

In order to qualify for NHS bursary support, those applying for diploma and degree level programmes will have to:

    • Have been ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands or the Isle of Man throughout the three years preceding the first day of the first academic year of the programme, other than for the purpose of receiving full-time education; and
    • Be ordinarily resident in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland on the first day of the first academic year of the programme; and
    • Have settled status in the United Kingdom within the meaning of the Immigration Act 1971 on the first day of the first academic year of the programme. This means that there must be no restrictions on your length of stay in the United Kingdom.
If you are an EU national, you may have your tuition fees met, but you will not normally qualify for a maintenance grant or bursary.

More detailed information regarding eligibility can be found on the Student Grants Unit website http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/816.aspx

Just note in reference to above, if you are going to Queens in Belfast you don't have to be a UK resident to get the bursary, you get it as long as you have been an EU resident for the past 3 years.

    im really upset.
ive just received a letter from nhs bursary people and im not going to get a single penny :(
wat the heck am i meant to live on :(
its not fair at all, aparently the diploma in midwifery has a non means tested bursary which is like over 6K?
and it also states on the letter my parents are meant to contribute over 3K a year to me :(
they are not going to do this, my parents dont give me anything :'(
i also applied for the student loan, thinking because i get nothing for the bursary, they will give me the full amount, not true. i get 1700 approx per year, which is solely going to cover transport :(

im so upset and worried about it all now becuase i know i wont be able to hold down my part time job and my parents are not willing to help me :(

which universities do the diploma in midwifery? what is the difference?

would it be possible for me to transfer onto that course?

    :(

sooo confused and upset please help :(

as if it doesnt exist how ****. i am actually feeling crap right now lol..
    yeh im living at home..
i do have a part time job who say wen i start uni they will work around me, but if i got a better bursary and a better loan i wouldnt have to work, which is what i want to be doin so i can put my whole self into my studies...

i'll probably feel fine tomorow, im just having an off day today..

how do i go about getting a job on bank, cos at least that would relate to my work, not sat on a checkout at sainsburys!!

am i more likely to get a HCA job if i say i am a student midwife too?

OMG! Mel... my situation is EXACTLY the same as yours
No bursary at all... not a penny, living at home and like you, parents are expected to hand over £3k a year! Applied for the loan...£1744 a year! It's ridiculous and extremely unfair, especially when they can justify giving some people £19,000 bursaries!!!
Everybody should get a basic award for putting 3 years hard work into the NHS despite your parents income, or your own income, or how many children!
I too have a part time job which funds all my own petrol, clothes, everything etc as I never ask my parents for money! My work too (lol this is so weird) have said they'll work around me and I can work when I can it's absolutely fine, but I know that when placements kick in and assignments and long days at uni, there's no way i'll be able to fit much in :'( if anything...
Put a massive downer on my day, and what makes it worse, I'm waiting for my A Level results in 2 days time as well! Feeling pretty rubbish and regretting agreeing to be sent home an hour early from work this morning!

    rubbish isnt it!
im sending a 3 page letter of complaint tomorow ha

oh and a question for anyone who can help:

i have worked part time at sainsburys for 2 years and 6 months, so i can say that i am self- suffiecent or whatever u call it, you know where u are indepenent and support youself, wen i have worked there for 3 years?

meaning at the mo im gettin zero bursary in sept 09, but in sept '10 i will have worked for 36 months, however its just part time 12 hours a week, so will they still accpet that as independent??

cos this means i only have one year of no money and next year (if i manage to keep on my part time job thru uni!!!) i will be able to apply for it again and not include parental stuff cos it will be my own earnings????

Mel - sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I think your living at home would stop you from being independent as far as means testing is concerned... I'm so sorry that you're having to go through this - it sounds so unfair!

I work bank (through NHS Professionals) and they want you to have 12-18 months of experience in healthcare before they will consider your application.

Please don't give up - even if you have to take a year out by deferring and get some serious money in the bank, this can't be the end of your dream... good luck! :bighug: xxx
